Philip H. Pollock, Jr. papers.

General description of the collection: The Philip H. Pollock, Jr. papers consist of undated photocopies of SSGT Pollock's September 2000 memoir titled: A World War II memoir, June 1942 through December 1945. Included in that memoir are an article dated March 1988 titled: A battle, a Death, an amazing coincidence, an undated article titled: An infantryman's day with the Army Air Corps, his order to report for iInduction dated 17 March 1943, his ASTP certificate of completion dated 4 Dec 1943, a family photo dated December 1945, a reunion photo dated 1988, his Chemical Warfare School certificate of proficiency dated 25 Aug 1945, and his separation and discharge dated 23 Nov 1945. During his basic training, transport to Europe and service with the 87th Infantry Division, he admired the M1 Garand Rifle and compared it to the German Army equivalent. He noted his first sighting of the V-1 buzz bomb, and talks about the Army Air Corps P-47 fighters helping to knock out German tanks and cannon in the Ardennes. He described his crowded troop transport, its awful food, and seasickness of troops due to rough conditions and compares it to his transport back to the US for furlough which had ample space and excellent food. He notes the troubles with segregation in New Orleans and again in France where Black soldiers dating French women upset soldiers from the South. He reports on the hospitality of the civilians to soldiers and their families during division training in South Carolina. The first article included focuses on a fellow soldier, Lieutenant Gerald Greer, and the second on the Army Air Corps.
